Dentures replace missing teeth with a removable prosthetic — either a full arch (all upper or lower teeth) or a partial (replacing some teeth while keeping healthy ones). They’re a well-established option for patients who aren’t candidates for implants or prefer not to have surgery.
Full dentures
A full denture replaces an entire arch of teeth. It rests on the gums and is held in place by suction and the shape of the jaw ridge. Full dentures are typically recommended when all remaining teeth in an arch need to be removed.
Partial dentures
A partial denture fills gaps left by multiple missing teeth. It attaches to remaining natural teeth using metal clasps or precision attachments, which makes it more stable than a full denture. Partials are custom-made so the artificial teeth blend with your natural ones.
The fitting process
Making a well-fitting denture takes several appointments:
- Impressions and measurements — We take digital or physical impressions and record jaw measurements.
- Try-in — A wax model is tested for fit and appearance before the final version is made.
- Delivery and adjustment — The finished denture is placed and adjusted. Follow-up visits are common as your mouth adapts.
Dentures typically need a reline or replacement every 5–10 years as the jaw changes shape over time.
Implant-supported options
If you want more stability than a conventional denture provides, implant-supported options are available:
- Overdentures — removable but anchored to implants
- All-on-4 — a fixed, full-arch restoration
These require surgery but stay in place significantly better than conventional dentures.
Caring for your denture
Remove and clean dentures nightly. Soaking overnight keeps them from drying out. Brush with a soft denture brush — not regular toothpaste, which is too abrasive. Come in for regular exams and cleanings even if you have no natural teeth, so we can check gum and tissue health.
