A root canal removes infected or damaged pulp from inside a tooth, cleans and seals the canals, and saves the tooth from extraction. Despite the reputation, a root canal typically feels about the same as getting a filling — the pain is from the infection before the procedure, not from the procedure itself.
When you need one
A root canal is usually recommended when:
- Tooth decay has reached the pulp (the inner nerve tissue)
- A tooth is cracked deeply enough to expose the pulp
- A previous filling or crown has failed and infection has reached the pulp
- There’s an abscess (infection) at the root of the tooth
Signs that suggest you might need one: sharp or throbbing tooth pain, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling near a tooth, or a bump on the gum near the affected tooth.
What the procedure involves
- X-rays — We use dental X-rays or 3D imaging to see the canals and confirm the diagnosis.
- Anesthesia — Local anesthesia numbs the area. Oral sedation is available if you’d like additional help relaxing.
- Cleaning the canals — The infected pulp is removed, the canals are shaped and disinfected.
- Sealing — The canals are filled with a biocompatible material and the tooth is sealed.
- Crown — Most teeth that have had root canals need a crown afterward to protect and strengthen them.
The whole procedure typically takes one to two appointments.
After treatment
Mild soreness for a day or two after is normal. Over-the-counter pain relievers usually handle it. Avoid chewing hard foods on that side until the permanent crown is placed.
If root canal treatment isn’t enough
In some cases, infection persists after a root canal. More advanced endodontic treatment — such as retreatment or an apicoectomy — can address this. If the tooth isn’t salvageable, extraction and replacement with an implant or bridge may be the next step.
